The PMD principle can easily be integrated onto a single CMOS chip. This means applications that were previously impossible due to size constraints can now become a reality. A key medical development is the trend toward minimally invasive surgery, where the size of surgical instruments plays an important role. A range of new PMD-based 3D applications for medical technology is already under development.

PMD enables the detection of human bodies breath motion in high resolution. With PMD’s unique 3D video camera it is possible to capture the multidimensional breath signal at different positions of the body in realtime (e.g. Thorax or Abdomen). This helps to reduce motion artefacts at CT, PET or MRT Scans. As an example breath detection with PMD’s 3D camera helps to optimize the radiation of tumors in Oncology Therapy which will result in an efficient cancer treatment.
