PMD at a glance
Since 1996, our unique technology has revolutionized the world of 3D ToF imaging, which until then had been restricted by large, costly components. Continuous technological advances in the following years led to the first mass market products in 2005.
This new generation of "Smart-Pixel" sensors is able to capture a complete 3D scene in real time without any moving parts, e.g. as used in scanners. With these new semiconductor components, it is possible to "perceive" distance in addition to the common grayscale information directly.
A modulated optical signal sent out by a transmitter illuminates the scene to be measured. The reflected light is detected by the PMD sensor, which is able to determine the time-of-flight per every single pixel. Thus the complete 3D information is captured in parallel - without needing excessive calculation power.
Because PMD sensors have first-class suppression of background illumination properties, built in to every single pixel, PMD-based 3D imaging can be deployed in a wide range of indoor and outdoor applications.
In short, it is an extremely versatile technology suitable for diverse applications and industries – helping developers in a wide range of sectors to explore new dimensions.
